Intermediate Spanish Conversation and Composition
(SPAN 3050)

Spring Semester 2022

Taught in Spanish

After almost two years without Spanish classes, I returned to my studies by transferring to Clemson and majoring in Spanish. For this class, we had discussions and wrote compositions about various abstract topics, including love, power, and happiness. For example, we wrote a letter to a political about an issue that we are passionate about (see bottom of this page for link to letter, under Spanish Language Competency Samples)

Spanish Translation & Interpreting Classes, Newcastle University

September 2018-May 2020

Before transferring to Clemson, I was a student at Newcastle University in the UK, specializing in Spanish Translation & Interpreting and Japanese. I took Spanish Language, Translation, and Interpreting classes for my first two years of study before my virtual study abroad in Japan (September 2020-March 2021). For my studies, I was awarded a Higher Education Diploma by Newcastle University (see sample at the bottom of this page.)

Intercultural Competence Training

Spanish Through Culture
(SPAN 3180)

Currently in progress.

Instructed in Spanish, this course explores Spanish-speaking culture through a nuanced lens, dividing class content by region or country and emphasizing intersectionality. Lessons are primarily discussion-based, with some oral presentations and monthly critical analysis papers in Spanish reacting to scholarly articles. For example, we wrote an essay responding to an article about the hijab in Spain (see bottom of this page for link to paper, under intercultural competency samples)

Latin American History and Civilization
(SPAN 4980)

Spring of 2023.

I will take this class during my semester abroad in Córdoba, Argentina (Feb-Aug 2023). After, I will provide a description of the concepts studied and samples of my coursework at the bottom of this page.

World Music
(MUSC 3140)

Summer 2022

Taken online asychronously, over the course of six weeks, this course covered ethnomusicology, elements of music, and the music of Africa, the Middle East, India, Japan, Indonesia, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, and Trinidad. For my extra credit paper reacting to this NPR tinydesk concert (see sample at bottom of this page), I received the following feedback: "I can honestly say this is one of the best papers I have ever read in this class."

Literature and Humanities Classes

Introduction to Literary Genres (SPAN 4060)

Spring of 2023.

I will take this Spanish and Latin American literature class during my semester abroad in Córdoba, Argentina (Feb-Aug 2023). After, I will provide a description of the concepts studied and samples of my coursework at the bottom of this page.

Introduction to Literature

Newcastle University, 2018-2019

I took this class in the UK, where courses last a full academic year. For this course, we read a variety of Spanish literature forms, including the novel El cartero de Neruda by Antonio Skármeta.

Film and Irish History
(HIST 4600)

Summer 2022

For this class, which fulfilled my major requirement of a course related to either Latin American or European history, we watched ten movies set across Irish history (from 1845 onwards). We then constructed essays about the films' depiction of Irish people, culture, and history. These essays taught me transferrable skills, including the ability to critically analyze media and its depictions of cultural groups depending on a variety of factors, including the sociopolitical and

historical background of when the film was produced.

Minor (Travel & Tourism) Training

Tourism Management
(PRTM 3450)

Currently in progress.

Covers nine Harvard Business Publishing case studies, where students read real-world examples of management issues associated with businesses in the tourism sector, including hotels, airlines, and destination marketing organizations. Students write a response paper proposing solutions for the given case, performing SWOT analyses, and critically analyzing the company's situation.

Sport Tourism and Events
(PRTM 3470)

Spring Semester 2022

Explored sport tourism through global and local lenses, examining its impact on our region with guest speakers from Visit Charlotte and Visit Greenville. The class also covered soccer-based tourism in Argentina and England, comparing two football clubs from each to facilitate discussions about authenticity and regional identity. Our final project was a competition where we created a TikTok marketing a sport tourism destination our our choice. My video, advertising Philadelphia, won second place.

Perspectives in
International Travel (PRTM 4470)

Spring Semester 2022

Heard from weekly guest speakers, including Clemson Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management PhD student specializing in Korean tourism, Indian tiger-based tourism, and also South Carolina's agricultural, rural farm-based tourism. Our final project was to write a paper simulating an international trip to a destination of our choice, for which I selected Mendoza, Argentina.
